Diabetes Mellitus

Do you know diabetes mellitus? What is diabetes mellitus? Diabetes mellitus is a disease or body disturbance that occurs due to body’s pancreas can’t produce insulin so the blood glucose level increases. This disease is also defined as a metabolic disorder which is caused by many factors that shows signs and symptoms such as, continually hyperglycemia and carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolic disorder. This disease is caused by the insulin that doesn’t work in the blood so it can make some complications on body organs. Diabetes mellitus is commonly abbreviated to DM.

Diabetes mellitus has been categorized into a global disease by World Health Organization (WHO) in 2000. The number of people with diabetes mellitus in the world continues to increase every year. An increasing number of people with diabetes vary in every country in this world. Based on WHO data in 2000, the top ten countries with the highest prevalence of diabetes sufferers in the world in 2000 are India, China, United States of America, Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, Russia, Brazil, Italy, and Bangladesh. Indonesia is the fourth largest country with diabetes mellitus sufferers in the world.

The cause of diabetes mellitus is classified into two factors, internal factors and external factors. The internal factors that causing diabetes mellitus are heredity and obesities. Heredity is related to this example, if in a family there is a person with diabetes, the child may suffer diabetes too. Obesities people have high risk to diabetes mellitus because excess body’s fat absorbs insulin, so it’s causing insulin deficiency which is resulting hyperglycemia. Whereas external factors that causing diabetes mellitus is the uncontrolled life style. Now, there are many people with uncontrolled life style in the world. It is reflected by some activities such as, diet without considering the nutrient, lack of exercise, and stress continues to increase.

People can be determined as diabetes mellitus sufferers if they experience some of diabetes mellitus signs and symptoms. Commonly, diabetes mellitus signs and symptoms are polydipsia, polyuria, polyfagia, blood glucose level on fasting is > 120 mg/dl, blood glucose level on two hours after eating is > 200 mg/dl, blur vision, wound that won’t heal, sexuality problem, numb or tingling hands or feet, and vagina infection for female. Polydipsia is a condition in which the diabetes sufferers thirst easily and become want to drink frequently. Polyuria is a condition in which the diabetes sufferers urinate frequently. And a condition in which the diabetes sufferers are hungry easily so they often meal is called polyfagia. The increasing blood glucose level causes some complication in the body organs such as disturbance in periphery nerve system, disturbance in capillaries blood vessels, and blood flow obstruction which caused some signs and symptoms like numb or tingling hands or feet, wound that won’t heal, sexuality disorder, and vagina infection for female.

Based on the explanation above, diabetes mellitus is one of diseases that require special attention from everyone. Start from now everyone has to know about this global disease. This disease is included into chronic disease because it can suffer people in a long period and cause complications on body’s organs such as heart obstruction, kidney disorder, and blindness. Actually, this disease can be controlled by doing a healthy life style such as, controlled eating by considering the nutrient, regular exercise, proper diet, reducing stress levels, and checking blood pressure and blood glucose level regularly.
